History
The Gay and Lesbian Latino Organization (GALLO) was founded in 1989 by a group of Latino LGBTQA+ individuals in the Worcester area to address the unique challenges they faced in their communities. The organization aimed to create a supportive space that addressed isolation, discrimination and the disconnect individuals experienced from their families and communities. GALLO provided a safe and affirming environment for Latino LGBTQA+ individuals to connect with others who shared similar experiences and challenges. Until 2004, GALLO played a crucial role in fostering inclusivity, creating community and empowering individuals to address their specific needs by contributing to both personal empowerment and broader social changes.
The legacy of GALLO continues to be felt in many ways and it shaped the conversations around intersectional identities and community support within both the Latino and LGBTQA+ communities. It was these conversations that led to the creation of Somos de Ambiente in 2023. Somos de Ambiente was established to address the evolving social realities and needs of the Latino LGBTQA+ community.
